Energy Efficient Routing Protocol in UWSNs using ACO Algorithm

Research Abstract:
This paper proposes a novel energy-efficient routing protocol for Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs) based on the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm. Inspired by the foraging behavior of ants, artificial ants explore possible paths from underwater sensor nodes to surface sinks, depositing virtual pheromones that evaporate over time. The proposed protocol selects optimal routes based on multiple criteria: residual node energy, node depth, acoustic channel quality, and distance to the surface. Compared to traditional routing protocols (DBR, EEDBR), the ACO-based protocol demonstrates significant improvements in packet delivery ratio, reduced energy consumption per node, and balanced traffic load distribution, ultimately extending the overall network lifetime
